59 - Jake Williams

Height: 176cm Weight: 72kg

Date of Birth: 20 December 1993

Recruited From: De La Salle (VAFA)

Background: Another promising VFL listed youngster with family ties to the Black and White, Jake Williams will make the step up to state league level after starring in the Amatuers last season. Jake, the younger brother of former VFL wingman Sam Williams (who will step away from football in 2014 owing to work commitments), is a highly credentialed midfielder who made his name with De La Salle. Williams won the Woodrow Medal as the best-and-fairest player in the VAFA Premier Division in 2013 and participated in the AFL Victoria Young Guns Game during the VFL Finals Series. Williams boasts good foot skills and elite endurance (he ran 6.15 in Collingwood's two kilometre time trial) was on the radar of at least one AFL club ahead of the 2013 Rookie Draft.

Dale Tapping Says: He’s come across from the Amateurs. He is extremely fit, a really good user of the ball, makes really good decisions with the ball. He’s had a very good pre-season. I think he’s an exciting talent.

60 - Dylan Orval

Height: 191cm Weight: 90kg

Date of Birth : 29 July 1993

Recruited From: Rowville/Oakleigh U18/Adelaide

SANFL Reserves Games: 17 games (for Central Districts)
SANFL Reserves Goals: 20 goals (for Central Districts)

Background: The son of former Magpie forward Mark Orval (seven games in 1988-1989), Dylan is attempting to return to AFL ranks after spending two years on Adelaide's rookie list. His career has been hampered by injuries in recent years, most notably the knee reconstruction that temporarily derailed his junior days while playing for the Oakleigh Chargers. Orval, a close friend of senior wingman Paul Seedsman, played 17 SANFL reserves games for Central Districts in his two years with the Crows where he was used mainly as a key forward.

Dale Tapping Says: Losing key forward Matt Boland to WAFL club Subiaco, Dylan is looked upon as being that replacement on our VFL list. We still think he can get to that. He’s working hard to get back fitness wise and do all the rehab. We’re just looking forward to him playing footy, really. He hasn’t had a lot of luck in recent times.

Key 2013 SANFL Reserves Statistics (7 games; averages in brackets)
Disposals: 86 (12.3) Marks: 29 (4.1) Tackles: 12 (1.7) Inside 50s: 7 (1.0) Score Assists: 3 (0.4) Marks Inside 50: 2 (0.3) Tackles Inside 50: 1 (0.1) Contested Marks: 2 (0.3)

61 - Nick Gray

Height: 185cm Weight: 78kg

Date of Birth: 24/9/1992

Recruited From: Mansfield

Background: A reliable onballer recruited from Josh Fraser territory in Mansfield, north-east of Melbourne. Gray was named in the VCFL Under-19 representative squad in 2012 and wore No. 33 for the Eagles alongside former Geelong stalwart David Mensch. Between 2009 and 2012, Gray played a total of 40 senior games for Mansfield, kicking 14 goals along the way. In 2012, he bagged 12 goals from 18 games and was rewarded for another consistent season with Mansfield's Best and Fairest.

He was a revelation in his first season at Victoria Park, playing in 17 of a possible 19 senior games and contributing in a variety of roles each week. Gray evolved into one of Collingwood's most dependable players, be it negating the opposition stars or stepping up to play a more creative role in the midfield or forward of the centre. The tall onballer ended his season with 19 disposals and seven clearances in the Elimination Final loss to the Borough.

Dale Tapping Says: A really good pre-season. Nick’s been really good for our VFL program. He never misses training. Since he’s been here he just gets it done, no complaints, works really hard, fit, disciplined and played 71 games last year in his first year which was a great effort. It’s probably more than he thought he would. I’ve got no doubt he will play good games for us again this year. He’s a really good character.

Key 2013 VFL Statistics (17 games): Kicks: 111, Marks: 48, Handballs: 118, Disposals: 229, Clearances: 28, Tackles: 52, Inside 50s: 34, Rebound 50s: 12

62 - Lachie Ferguson

Height: 170cm Weight: 73kg

Date of Birth: 30/7/1992

Recruited From: Collegians

2013 VFL Games: 13
2013 VFL Goals: 7

Background: A star at Amateur level with Collegians, Ferguson was one of the keys to Collingwood's charge to its first finals appearance in three years last season. A small forward with great goal sense, Ferguson's frenzied attack on the ball and the ball carrier made him arguably the most well-rounded small forward in the competition in the first half of 2013. One minute he would be putting the clamps on the opposition as they tried to rebound from half back. The next, he would be seen bustling out of a pack and setting up a teammate in space.

Unfortunately a leg injury sustained against Box Hill in round 13 put the kibosh on an outstanding start to his first year at state league level. The regard in which he is held by the coaching staff was clear for all to see when he was summoned for the Elimination Final, just 10 weeks after he initially broke his leg. Ferguson had 17 disposals and registered three score assists for the fourth time in just 13 games as the Magpies went down by 25 points.

While playing for Collegians in 2012, Ferguson took home a swag of awards, namely the competition's Rising Star Award that recognised his 14 goals and 15 goals during the home and away season. He was named as his side's best in the second semi-final, with his two goals helping them reach the Premier Grand Final against Old Xaverians.

The Grand Final represented Ferguson's third premiership in as many seasons after featuring in Wesley College's 2010 APS premiership and in the Collegians' 2011 triumph (in which he kicked three goals). Ferguson was influential during the decider, kicking two goals in the first half.

In 2012, he played in all three VAFA representative sides (seniors, Under-23s and Under-19s) and was the co-captain of the competition's Under-19 team.

He wore the Big V against AFL Sydney in the VAFA's 47-point win, receiving the Spirit of the Big V Award while playing alongside names such as Matthew Ball (brother of Luke and a former Hawthorn midfielder), Jackson Eade (the son of Collingwood's Football and Coaching Strategist Rodney Eade), Jack Bull (a former VFL Magpie), Shane Neaves (a former Melbourne rookie) and Josh Maddern (who played at VFL level for Bendigo).

A former Wesley College student, Ferguson was considered to be something of a smokey for selection during the 2012 drafts a a mature age recruit. He boasts clean hands, sharp disposal and great goal sense and is a player who relishes the physical contest.

Dale Tapping Says: Great pre-season. Probably the first real, solid pre-season he’s had for three or four years – or certainly the biggest pre-season he’s had – last year he was a bit limited with what he could do and he still provided a good output in games when he played. He’s a lot fitter this year, he’s played a lot more through the midfield in training and the practice matches. He’s a pretty dynamic player. I think he’ll be a good contributor for us.

Key 2013 VFL Statistics (13 games): Kicks: 92, Marks: 24, Handballs: 112, Disposals: 204, Clearances: 17, Tackles: 43, Inside 50s: 33, Rebound 50s: 5

63 - Lachlan Howe

Height: 199cm Weight: 99kg

Date Of Birth: 12/6/1993

Recruited From: Rennie (NSW)/Murray U18/St Joseph’s/Geelong VFL

VFL Games: 7
VFL Goals: 4

Background: A lean ruckman with the scope to push into attack, Howe grew up in country New South Wales before shifting to Melbourne to study at Xavier College. After playing in the TAC Cup with the Murray Bushrangers, he was used by Geelong's VFL team as its 23rd man on several occasions across 2012-2013. It was a role he filled in the Cats' loss to Box Hill in the 2013 VFL Grand Final. His acquisition means the Magpies will boast very capable support for its tall timber this season, particularly if veteran Ben Hudson spends time in the senior side.

Dale Tapping Says: He’s been with us since just prior to Christmas and has been good. He’s played in a couple of intra-club practice matches with the AFL boys. He’s playing in different roles at the moment and developing some other parts of his game, but we certainly think he will be a good contributor for us throughout the course of the year.

Key 2013 VFL Statistics (five games; averages in brackets)
Disposals: 37 (7.4) Marks: 8 (1.6) Tackles: 11 (2.2) Contested Marks: 1 (0.2) Contested Possessions: 17 (3.4) Clearances: 6 (1.2) Score Assists: 1 (0.2) Hitouts: 35 (7.0) Hitouts to Advantage: 17.1%

64 - Ryan Pendlebury

Height: 194cm Weight: 87kg

Date of Birth: 2/8/1992

Recruited From: Gippsland U18/Casey Scorpions/Sale/Bendigo

2013 VFL Games: 2
2013 VFL Goals: 0

Background: The youngest of Bruce and Lisa’s three sons, 22-year-old Ryan Pendlebury is following in the footsteps of his older brothers Kris and Scott in representing Collingwood on match day.

A defender who is best suited to playing on a second or third tall forward, Pendlebury arrives with experience with the Gippsland Power in the TAC Cup and VFL clubs Casey and Bendigo.

He performed strongly in Collingwood's practice match against Port Melbourne, a match Dale Tapping believes went a long way towards helping him secure a berth on the list for season 2014.

Dale Tapping Says: Ryan had an excellent game against Port Melbourne. He’s played a little bit of VFL footy previously at Casey and Bendigo and he is probably the fittest he’s ever been. He’s lost a little bit of weight in the right areas and has got a lot stronger. He’s had a really good pre-season and his performance against Port Melbourne was very good. He can play back, he can play wing, so he’s good some flexibility to his game.

Key 2013 VFL Statistics (2 games): Kicks: 8, Marks: 2, Handballs: 1, Disposals: 9, Clearances: 1, Tackles: 2, Inside 50s: 1, Rebound 50s: 3

65 - Tom Tyquin

Height: 183cm Weight: 76kg

Date of Birth: 24/9/1994

Recruited From: St Bedes-Mentone/Sandringham U18

2013 VFL Games: 5
2013 VFL Goals: 0

Background: Enjoyed an excellent TAC Cup campaign with Sandringham in 2012 and was considered unlucky to be overlooked on draft day at season's end. Possesses great foot skills and makes wise decisions when in possession. Plays mostly across half back and also across the wing where his slender frame did not count against him in the under-18s. Tyquin was invited to the testing for AFL Victoria's VFL Academy intake for 2013 during his first pre-season at Collingwood and he later broke through for five senior games towards the end of the season. The club has been extremely impressed by Tyquin's attitude to training where his work ethic and competitiveness have shone through, and his practice match form across half back to start 2014 means he will be in frame for selection early in the home and away season.

Dale Tapping Says: Tom’s in his second year on our list. He’s had a really good pre-season and hasn’t missed a session. His practice match form has been really solid when he’s played. He’s just really unobtrusive and probably deserves to get more credit for what he does. He’s no fuss and you tell him and he gets it done. A really simple attitude to playing the game and we think he can certainly play some good footy for us across the wing and half back.

Key 2013 VFL Stats (5 games): Kicks: 35, Marks: 15, Handballs: 20, Disposals: 55, Clearances: 4, Tackles: 13, Inside 50s: 11, Rebound 50s: 11

66 - Trent Cody

Height: 177cm Weight: 74kg

Date of Birth: 30/1/1985

Recruited From: Noble Park/Eastern U18

Background: A young midfielder fresh from the TAC Cup who has had to find a path to the VFL the hard way. During his junior career he suffered a badly broken leg and was forced to shift from the Dandenong Stingrays to the Eastern Rangers in the hope of reaching the highest level. Cody was a member of the Rangers' premiership team in 2013, winning 12 disposals and registering four inside 50s in the win against his old team at Etihad Stadium. Was a member of the Victorian U19 cricket team and earned a spot on Collingwood's VFL list through a series of consistent performances during the pre-season practice matches.

Dale Tapping Says: Trent received an invite to come into the program and he’s been really good. Very quiet and has some areas of his game he needs to improve but he’s a really good user of the ball and makes good decisions when he gets it. I think he’ll get some opportunities through the year and whatever he does this year I think there’s upside with him going forward. He’s a young player out of the TAC Cup and they always take a little bit more time.

68 - Josh Turner

Height: 183cm Weight: 74kg

Date of Birth: 29 March 1995

Recruited From: Lower Plenty/Northern U18

Background: A best-and-fairest winner with the Northern Knights, Turner is a consistent onballer who hails from Northern Football League club Lower Plenty. He was considered to be a leading contender for the 2013 Morrish Medal (the TAC Cup's best-and-fairest award) during his only season at TAC Cup level. He featured in every game and averaged 24 possessions and 4.5 tackles across the season.

Dale Tapping Says: Won the Northern Knights' best-and-fairest last year and has had a really good pre-season. He is a quiet kid who works hard, is a good user of the ball and played well against Port Melbourne. He will certainly get his opportunities throughout the course of the year as the 23rd man. I think he can be a really good player - not only this year, but I think he can develop into a good player.

69 - Callum Matheson

Height: 172cm Weight: 72kg

Date of Birth: 6/6/1994

Recruited From: St Kevin's/Western Jets

2013 VFL Games: 0
2013 VFL Goals: 0

Background: Learned his football with St Kevin's in the APS system and was named second best afield for his school when he helped keep Geelong College to only eight goals in 2012. Matheson was named in St Kevin's best against Caulfield Grammar, Scotch College, Haileybury College, Rostrevor, Geelong Grammar, Brighton Grammar and Xavier College and also managed to squeeze in two games for the Western Jets after playing one in 2011. At local level, Matheson plays for Williamstown CYMS and spent 2013 on Collingwood's Development List, impressing the coaching staff with his form in the pre-season practice matches.

Dale Tapping Says: Callum’s been promoted off our Development List. He is a small, hard working forward who is really diligent, works hard, tackles really well and is a really smart, clever player. He played good VFL practice matches last year and spent the year on the Development List and this year he’s made our list, which is great reward for the work he’s put in over the last 12 months. He will play games this year as the 23rd player. He’s worked really hard and it’s really good for Callum because he’s stuck at the task really well.

70 - Glenn Strachan

Height: 185cm Weight: 77kg

Date of Birth: 6/7/1990

Recruited From: South Croydon

2013 VFL Games: 1
2013 VFL Goals: 1

Background: Recruited from EFL club South Croydon, Stratchan sat out Collingwood's pre-season matches through injury last season but broke through for an early game against Frankston at Victoria Park. Was selected as a top-up player in the AFL team's intra-club match on 1 February and will be looking for further opportunities in 2014.

Dale Tapping Says: Had a strong pre-season and ran really well. He recorded some really good running times. He’s very damaging with his left foot and had a good pre-season. We’re trying to work on some parts of his game and give him opportunities in different spots on the ground to create some opportunities for him going forward but he’s set himself up pretty well to challenge for games. He’s had an excellent pre-season.

Key 2013 VFL Statistics (1 game): Kicks: 8, Marks: 3, Handballs: 2, Disposals: 10, Clearances: 0, Tackles: 0, Inside 50s: 2, Rebound 50s: 0

72 - Scott Greenhough

Height: 192cm Weight: 98kg

Date of Birth: 17/5/1993

Recruited From: Hoppers Crossing/Western U18

2013 VFL Games: 2
2013 VFL Goals: 0

Background: Something of a late developer, Greenhough broke through for his first TAC Cup game in June 2012 and impressed greatly in the second half of the year. On debut he acquitted himself well against an opponent 11cm taller and moved his Western Jets coach Steve Kretiuk to muse to the Maribrynong Weekly that he reminded him of North Melbourne's Majak Daw, "but with more of an engine".

Greenhough played played in the finals for Hoppers Crossing in Division One of the Western Region Football League as his side's first ruckman and he was credited as playing an instrumental role in Hoppers Crossing's rise during the first half of 2012.

The story surrounding his 2012 season is even more remarkable considering he was struck down with Glandular Fever prior to the year and was only listed by the Jets as a top age player when they asked AFL Victoria for special permission to take him on board as a result of his medical history.

As Western Jets Regional Manager Shane Sexton told the Wyndham Weekly, Greenhough "has terrific ingredients. He's really competitive in the ruck, fantastic around the ground and a good overhead mark."

The ruckman featured in Collingwood's practice match against the AIS-AFL Academy at the MCG in March 2013 and later made his debut for the VFL Magpies against Williamstown at Point Gellibrand in round five, when he competed well against Cameron Wood, winning 10 disposals to go with his 10 hitouts. His second and final appearance of the year was against Geelong at Victoria Park six days later.

Dale Tapping Says: A big ruck-defender who had a really bad ankle last year so he has taken a bit of time over the summer to get fit. He is getting his fitness and Scotty’s just going to be a really late developer. He’s a big body and we just want to continue to be able to develop his game.

Key 2013 VFL Statistics (2 games): Kicks: 20, Marks: 7, Handballs: 13, Disposals: 20, Clearances: 0, Tackles: 4, Inside 50s: 4, Rebound 50s: 1, Hitouts: 10

He has signed with Balwyn EFL as well. The funny thing is that Balwyn will pay him more $$ than Collingwood.
