Does anyone know why we have the draft so late? I mean, a month earlier and our little prospects could have gone over to Arizona. As it is, by the time they fly over, find a place, go through the induction program... they get a bit of training, then it's Christmas break, then they get half a pre-season under their belts.

Is there a particular reason for having the draft so late in the year?

I think its because it gives clubs the maximum time to assess its options, and gives potential players to nomminate themselves.

Another factor may be the fact that most of them are completing VCE, so give them time to finish their VCE exams, have a break then start worrying about footy again

I think you will find the draft is after schoolies. I mean if they held it before VCE exams, the players wouldnt be available for their clubs anyway for a few weeks, so no point and the last thing kids need is to worry about football during their exams

ES is corrent, the draft is scheduled so as to not interfere with studies for VCE exams.
