This may or may not help

Lol, thanks.

The people in that article certainly seem obnoxious, but I'm not sure I've met anyone like that here in Melbourne. I've met people who I thought might be hipsters, but they just tended to be popular people who happened to like good films and interesting music and were actually friendly and intelligent—a lot less shallow than many 'mainstream' people. Perhaps I'm going to the wrong parties. Razz

For me, hipsterism as a sub-cultural phenomenon can be a combination of any of these things

- slumming it (which is really an extension of the old 1990s slumming culture)
- deliberate and particular obscurantism when it comes to their tastes in music, fashion, food, etc (and the inherent oneupmanship involved with this), with a bias to retro styles and outdated means of production
- bizarre use of irony - trying to be authentic, but also hyper-aware of the artifice of their existence
- politically on the left, when they are not apathetic
- the almost inevitable way that hipsters end up being very similar to each other
- the denial by hipsters that they are hipsters
- the bank balance necessary to maintain this lifestyle (which will include trips to obscure and remote places in Asia, Eastern Europe)

OK, so it seems this is how to recognise a Hipster.

If it looks like a Hipster, and
Acts like a hipster, and
Denies that it's a Hipster, then

It's a hipster.

"Deliberate and particular obscurantism....and the inherent oneupmanship involved with this".
That's very well put and I wholeheartedly agree.

One day me and a mate were explaining to another bloke what a hipster was. At the end of the explanation, he goes to us 'so which one of you is a hipster', and we simultaneously pointed at each other. True story.

Lol. Doubt there's too much intolerance directed toward that kind. Shocked

Not cheap being hip.

Quote:
Where are the hip areas in Australia?
In Melbourne it’s the inner north including suburbs Fitzroy, Carlton, Brunswick, North Melbourne, Thornbury, Collingwood and Northcote.

No, it most certainly isn't. When Lola and I get a place by ourselves, we will probably only be able to live on the outer rim (Coburg, Northcote, Thornbury) at best. The other places are gradually getting overrun by yuppies and the prices are rising accordingly.

I was trying to work out why all of a sudden it's trendy to drink out of jars. Mason jars, big and small with metal screw on lids. FFS I've seen them for sale in Kmart of all places.

Apparently it's a Hipster thing. Rolling Eyes Like the mode of dress, the old fashioned bicycle that is dressed down to look like it was salvaged from an op shop, this whole drinking out of jars is a fkn hipster trend.

I'm over it, it's time for an open season.

I was recently chatting to a young lady who told me that her girl friends keep trying to set her up with blind dates, but they're always Hipsters. She was quite scornful of them, her comment was "Hipsters are just a girl with a beard. If I want to date a girl I'll date a real girl"

I genuinely lol'd.

One thing for sure, If I go somewhere and they try to serve me a drink in a fkn jar they can either put it in a glass or I'm leaving.

As they say in the classics, "Oi! I resemble that remark...". Razz
