the more details emerge, the more I feel for these girls, and understand how they couldn't escape for so long....
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/2013/05/09/10/22/life-inside-cleveland-house-of-horrors-revealed
They were chained up in separate rooms, isolated from each other. As for how couldn't they escape until now? As in the article above:
"TV news station WOIO cited law enforcement agents as saying Ariel Castro would routinely play a "dangerous game" with the women by announcing he was leaving before waiting to see if they would try to escape.
The test was designed to instill a fear of escape in the women, a ploy which appears to have worked for nearly 10 years - until Monday"
Thank God Amanda tried her luck on Monday. Just horrendous on all levels. |

Yep. She showed serious guts to take the chance not knowing where he was.
Apart from the 3 girls (which is totally bad enough in it's own right) I can't help thinking what kind of upbringing has the kid had? 6 year old girl, has she grown up being used to seeing mum being chained up? What the hell is "normal" to this kid?

I thought 3 men were involved.
So far it would seem only one has been charged. _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

Just a guess, but perhaps they're going to attempt to try them separately. They had to do that with the West Memphis Three for some legal reason or other. _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

We're really pretty lucky here. We do get cyclones but you pretty much know the vulnerable areas and building codes are designed to risk manage that, the only other main natural disaster we get are bushfires and the occasional flood both of which can be mitigated against.
We don't get tornadoes or earthquakes. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

^Yes we do just not as large on the scale of destruction as other countries do.
However when I was growing up tornadoes in this country were never caught on film or believed to be the cause of destruction yet over recent years that has changed.

Correct weight, Swoop.
We do get earthquakes, Stui. See http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/on-this-day-in-history-newcastle-earthquake-strikes.htm for an example. But we don't get too many or such big ones as some other places.
Volcanic eruptions are rare, though southern Victoria is very much in the zone and we are overdue for one.
Tornadoes used to be very rare and quite small but have become moderately common these last few years, and are getting bigger too. They occur in most parts of the world but are a mega-problem in the central USA because of some accidents of geography. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

OK, I should have qualified my statement, we don't get tornadoes or earthquakes that do serious damage.
Quakes are usually rare and very minor, similar for tornadoes. The recent tornado up at Koonoomoo was a fluke. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

12 deaths is usually considered serious.
And tornadoes are no fluke anymore: we are getting them a lot more often now; there will be others and sooner or later, the consequences will be nasty. Meanwhile, floods, bushfires, and hurricanes all get bigger and bigger. _________________ Let's eat Grandma. Commas save lives! |

I'm 36 and growing up I never remember hearing about or seeing news footage of tornades in Australia yet over the last 5 years or more that has changed.
The climate in this country is certainly changing.
P.S-I thought any volcanoes in this country were extinct? _________________ He's mad. He's bad. He's MaynHARD! |

Assuming we mean the mainland, Swoop, yes, they are all extinct. The most recent one was at Mt Gambier and it finished up 4500 years ago. But the Newer Volcanic Province, which covers the area from about Kilmore and Broadmeadows through Ballarat and Geelong to Hamilton and Mt Gambier, has been subject to eruptions now and again for millions of years now and the experts say that we have no reason to believe the eruptions are over. They just pop up at more-or-less random anywhere in the zone, and at any time. In fact, we are overdue for another one now.
