i am following it because my youngest daughter has a teacher at her school that's brother is in orica-team-green.

the youngest of 4pies spoke to him on skype last week and he said he wasn't confident on the hill stages but to our suprise he did quite well.

Yes. I often have the SBS coverage on whilst I'm working on my pc.
Not so much for the race but the French scenery and historic buildings makes it worthwhile.
Question: How the hell are the overall placings worked out ??
ie. 1. The winner of last night's stage also won another stage and came second in another but is nowhere to be seen on the leaderboard.
2. Riders who crash out and lose heaps of time to the main bunch still seem to be in the running.
3. In the presentations, last night, we get shown the overall leader getting his yellow shirt but he's hardly mentioned in the call of the stage.
4. In the mad scramble for the line, at the end of each stage, a dozen or so 'sprinters' break from the peloton to get to the line first. How are the placings of the hundred (whatever) or so others recorded ?
5. I've watched quite a bit of the Tour over the years and NEVER once heard the comms explaining all or any of the above.

Hi Donny, I have just started watching the Tour this year after previously labelling it as boring. Well, nothing could be further from the truth! Am absolutely loving it. Pity I have just returned to China today and I don't have SBS TV here (or any TV for that matter).
But in escence I have gleaned the following:
1) Stage winners set themselves for certain stage wins but are not interested in the overall win. Some seem to target one stage on the whole tour to go for broke and conserve energy at other times, depending on their skills. The overall is purely timed based GC (general classification), but then you have the points jersey and the king of the mountain, so all of these guys have different aims.
2) In the running for the GC is basically only a handful of 'team captains' whose team members are basically only supporting them (setting the pace, providing slip stream, warding off challengers, getting drinks etc ).
3) Wiggins basically sits at the front of the main group and they seem happy to allow a break away group of 4-5 riders to go for glory as long as they aren't challengers to him. He is not taking any risks, it seems.
4) GC time based is purely that - time. The placings are irrelevant overall apart from the winner, for the yellow jersey. Then there is the points race - I guess they are getting points at set parts of each stage and at the finish.
5) Agree, it's all rather confusing! Some info off wikipedia below for points (green jacket) and mountain (poka dot jacket). Yellow is easy - time based only.
Points SystemThe points classification in the Tour de France is a secondary competition in the Tour de France, that started in 1953. Points are given for high finishes in a stage and for winning intermediate sprints, and these are recorded in a points classification. It is considered a sprinters' competition. The leader is indicated by a green jersey.

King of the Mountain Points Scoring
In the Tour de France, at the top of each significant climb, points are awarded to the riders who are first over the top. The climbs are categorised from 1 (most difficult) to 4 (least difficult) based on their steepness and length. A fifth category, called Hors categorie (outside category) applies to mountains rated even more severe than first category. Similar ratings apply to climbs in the other major Tours.
In the Tour de France, the leader in the mountains competition wears a distinctive polka dot jersey (French: maillot à pois rouge). Although the King of the Mountains was first recognised in the 1933 Tour de France, the distinctive jersey was not introduced until 1975
But the commentary standard is still spectacular, as is the scenery and spectacle of these guys pushing themselves to the limit and attacking with ferocious speed out of nowhere. Loving it, finally converted! _________________ Ni hao |
