That will make for soem interesting photos!!

Anyway...

David, if you are travelling by train here is a website that I used as a guide when organising our travel last year

http://www.seat61.com/

has lots of info on buying tickets, types of trains, routes etc.

We didn't book via this site as we ended using a friend to book all our trips. With two kids on tow we thought would be easier to book all our seats in advance. We had a Eurail pass (4 countries, 5 days) and had booked seats (managed to get 1st class a good rate) for Eurostar and trips Paris/Barcelona, Barcelona/Lyon, Lucerne/Venice & Venice/Rome.

You don't have to book seats on the regoinal trains but you may have to book seats on the more popular high speed train routes depending on when you want to travel.

Train travel in Europe is great, all trains ran on time, don't have to get to the station hours in advance (unlike airports) and you can relax & watch the scenery. The only thing I wouldn't recommend is overnight trains. We did overnight from Paris to Barcelona - was like trying to sleep on a rollercoaster & would have been better off travelling during the day (what we saved in nights accom. we spent on 4 sleeping berths.

Thanks DB. Smile

I think we're definitely leaning towards the Eurail as our main method of getting around.

I really enjoyed Leeds in the UK - amazing to see such an old castle and now with a golf course around it.

So many amazing historic things to see - city walls that still exist, old pubs with really small doorways and the Tower.

You will have a great time - but do heed the words on insurance and make sure that health insurance is included.
