A burley midfielder, Shackleton hails from Burnie, Tasmania. In
his junior days, Shackleton won the Morrish Medal, for the best
player in the TAC Cup in 2002.
Shackleton was then drafted by Collingwood at pick 29 in the 2002
National Draft. Shackleton spent 2003 at Williamstown, where he
gained experience from players such as Adrian Fletcher and Brad
Lloyd. Shackleton was often criticised for his weight, with people
saying he was too slow for AFL football.
2004 was a good year for Shackleton, who came very close mid season
to making his AFL debut after a hitting a rich vein of form midway
through the year.
