Brett Howman, from Hawthorn's list of last season is training with the rookie squad. Also Craig Caracella, brother of Blake from Essendon, and Brett Warburton, who was on last years rookie list. Steven Maher played with Sydney reserves last year after doing the preseason at Collingwood.

From watching training so far Chad Liddell and Chris Curran look set for big seasons. Shannon Gibson is the early pick of the players recruited from other clubs. Scott Whiston appears very promising despite being last pick in the draft. He is fast and has been matching Scott Russell in the endurance training. He reminds a lot of a young Nathan Buckley and may like Buckley take till he's about 20 to get really going. Stuart Mangin, James Wasley and Chris Tarrant have been sitting out of most training recovering from injuries. Chris Tarrant has great skills and reminds as a young Chris Grant from the then Footscray.

Brad Smith appears to have good skills for a big man and is a lot better than you would expect given Richmonds desperate quest to get Brad Ottens. Jamie Tape is working hard and is injury free. Clinton King is quick and appears to be getting extra attention from Tony Shaw so it would be expected that he will figure in Collingwoods 1998 plans.

I'm sure I heard Tony Free's knee clicking as he ran laps at training so don't expect him to get back. On the other hand Lee Walker is flying and super fit. It was a shame Collingwood delisted him as it appears that Essendon will claim Lee in the pre-season draft if he completes the pre-season. Hopefully Collingwood will delist Matthew Francis, after he went to water aginst Adelaide when Monkhurst was suspended and he had his big opportunity, and be able to draft Lee Walker back.
